involvement of NGOs. She further informed that currently there were
45 additional senior citizen activity centres after additional 23 centres
were established under the JKM.
40. The President of NACSCOM informed that their organisation
had 41 members of senior citizen organisations throughout the
country and suggested collaboration with the JKM to organise outreach
programme for senior citizen in Malaysia. He also highlighted the
funding issue faced by the organisation.
41. Dr. Molly suggested that an online training programme could be
developed in order to gather feedback from general practitioners/
doctors, to identify gaps and knowledge and to develop appropriate
training database from these interested parties. Online training will
be cost effective. In relation to the important of having an updated
database on older persons as a baseline, she stressed that it could
be implemented with collaboration from ministries such as National
Registration Department and Ministry of Health who are the
custodian of the required information necessary to develop the
database.
42. With regard to issues lack of Ehsan Home raised by participant from
UUMC to accommodate a large number of sickly older persons, Puan
Ruhaini explained that Government’s stand on placement of older
persons in institutions should be treated as the last resort with family
and community taking the major role in supporting the welfare of the
older persons. That said, the Government is nonetheless planning to
build another Ehsan home in Bukit Mertajam, in addition to the two
existing homes.
43. It was informed by one of the medical practitioners that the
Ministry of Health had provided structured programme which included
registration and regular screening for older persons and programmes
under the National Blue Ocean Strategy. However, the main challenge
in implementing this programme is the issue of transportation to
ferry the older persons to clinics for medical services and follow up
check-ups.
