Major Findings Recommendations: and • The number of inmates exceeded the maximum capacity of the prison. • JAMAKON recommended that under trial prisoners should be made available before the courts on due date; • JAMAKON recommended that the foreigner prisoners who had completed their terms should be repatriated; • JAMAKON drew attention of the district and sessions judges and the district magistrate of Cox’s Bazar so that they would take necessary steps for mental and physical development of the children who are living in the prison with their mother; • JAMAKON recommended to the government to appoint an assistant surgeon in the Cox’s Bazar Prison to ensure proper health care of the prisoners; • JAMAKON recommended to the Prison Superintendent of Cox’s Bazar to take necessary actions to issue reminder letters to the concerned authority about jail appeal; • JAMAKON recommended to the Senior Prison Superintendent to launch antidrug campaign in the prison; • JAMAKON recommended for investigation of the allegations of misappropriation and corruptions done by the prison authority and report back to JAMAKON; • JAMAKON recommended to the district and sessions judge of Cox’s Bazar to take necessary steps for the poor prisoners to let them have access to legal aid services provided by the government. 24 SOME SUCCESS CASES JAMAKON intervenes to recover Khas Land in Kishoreganj Mr. Maznu Mian, a rickshaw puller lodged a complaint with JAMAKON alleging that some terrorists threatened him with dire consequences if he would move into the land which he had been allocated by the government as a landless person. He also alleged that the local police station did not render any assistance. Having regard to the importance of the case, JAMAKON issued a letter to the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Kishoreganj district for inquiry. The DC requested the Police Supper of Kishoreganj to look into the matter. According to the said inquiry report, the land in question belonged to Akola Ravi Dash and the he had been possessing the land by building infrastructure in it. None of the parties had sole and absolute title in the said land. However, JAMAKON was not convinced with the report and requested the Additional District Commissioner for another inquiry. After a thorough inquiry involving dialogue and discussion with both of the parties and others concerned, it transpired that Akola Ravi Dash had been unlawfully possessing the land. Finally, the Court issued an order for handing over the land to Mr. Maznu Mian. Mr. Sohel Rana got his job back Mr Sohel Rana was dismissed from his job because of his sexual orientation. His case was conveyed to the JAMAKON by BANDHU. JAMAKON investigated into the allegation and summoned the employer. JAMAKON finally succeeded in mediating the matter and the employer paid compensation and also committed not to do such discrimination in future.
