HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Reference notes for the teacher: 1. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and general knowledge 56 1 The acronym ‘SUHAKAM’ is translated as the Human Rights COMMISSION of Malaysia. 2 One function of SUHAKAM is to enhance people’s KNOWLEDGE of human rights through campaigns, talks and education. 3 One of the human rights in the UDHR is the right to practise one’s culture and RELIGION. 4 The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is an international TREATY concerning children’s rights. 5 In Malaysia, children are protected under the law known as the Child ACT [2001]. 6 The primary aim of human rights is for every human being to be treated EQUALLY and to live with dignity. 7 The principle of best INTERESTS of the child is among the four main principles in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. 8 Everyone has the right to EXPRESS his/her opinions freely and responsibly. 9 One type of bullying is PHYSICAL bullying which involves parts of the body, such as hitting, slapping, kicking, shoving which can cause injury or even death. 10 Every child must be protected from violence, abuse and NEGLECT. 11 If a child faces serious family problems, the government can place the child in a WELFARE home. 12 Children are entitled to an adequate STANDARD of living. 13 Children have the right to take part in CULTURAL and artistic activities. 14 The maximum age to be identified as a child in the eyes of the law is EIGHTEEN. 15 Children with disabilities, indigenous peoples, REFUGEES, migrants are some of the groups known as vulnerable or marginalised groups.
