Summary The National Human Rights Commission is pleased to present the Annual Report 2021 to the hon’ble President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in accordance with NHRC Act 2009. Like all other years this year too the Commission was sincere in playing its role. In this report a short description of NHRC’s activities of 2021. Especially this report highlights NHRC’s actions to develop and protect people’s civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. This year too NHRC arranged round table discussion, seminar with NGOs, civil society, student and people of all other sectors on raising awareness on human rights, raising voice against human rights violation and the ways for realizing rights. NHRC reformed its 12 thematic committees incorporating representatives from government and non-government organizations as part of its action plan. The Commission also reformed 04 benches with hon’ble Chairman, Full Time Member and Members: full bench, bench 01, bench 02 and settlement bench for operating complaints related activities. Besides, a committee has been formed to verify the complaints received from around the country. Following the committee’s verification next course of action taken in these four benches. The chapter wise summary of annual report 2021 is given below: Chapter 01: Introduction of National Human Rights Commission Formation of the Commission, background, recruitment process of members and continuity of the Commission is discussed. The People’s Republic of Bangladesh had been established as a result of struggle for human rights and our Father of the Nation, greatest Bengali of all time Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made it possible. In the declaration of our Liberation War ensuring equity, human dignity and social justice for the people of Bangladesh was mentioned. In sum, these are called human rights. The constitution of Bangladesh has the reflection of the philosophy of UDHR which was a gift to the nation by Bangabandhu within 10 months of our independence. The Commission was established one decade ago due to the demand of civil society of the counry and abroad and all other stakeholders as a balanced organization representing women-men and people of different class-profession. In addition, this chapter briefly discusses NHRC’s mandate, agenda, thematic committees and its activities and action plans.
