HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Implementation steps Activity 1 1. The students are divided into groups of 4 to 5 and each group appoints a leader. 2. The teacher writes words related to human rights on small pieces of paper that are folded and placed in a box. 3. Examples of human rights that can be written on the pieces of paper are: i. Right to life ii. Right to nationality iii. Freedom of opinion and expression iv. Protection from violence and exploitation v. Non-discrimination vi. Right to health vii. Right to education viii. Right to work ix. Freedom of religion x. Right to leisure and recreational activities Activity 2 1. Each group is required to choose one student to draw a piece of paper randomly from the box and to act out the phrase according to his/her imagination and appropriateness. The groups take turns to do so. 2. The students in the same group are given 2 minutes to guess the phrase. Each correct answer carries 2 marks. 3. If the group is unable to guess the phrase within 2 minutes, the teacher will give 30 seconds to any other group to guess the answer. Each correct answer carries 1 mark. 4. The activity continues until all the phrases in the box have been acted out and the group with the highest mark is declared the winner. 5. The students are reminded that the ‘actors’ cannot use or say anything but only perform actions to convey the meaning. Activity 3 1. The teacher engages in a question and answer session with the students using the questions below as a guide: i. What do those human rights mean? ii. Is it important for every child to enjoy those rights? iii. What is likely to happen if a child does not get to enjoy those rights? 42
