HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Implementation steps Activity 1 a. The students are divided into groups of 5 to 8. b. Each group is provided with mahjong paper and marker pens. c. The teacher lists 20 items (Appendix 1). Activity 2 d. The teacher reads out Scenario I (Appendix 2). e. The students are asked to choose 16 out of the 20 items by consensus among the group members and differentiating between wants and needs in order to lead a good life on the island. After choosing their 16 items, a group representative writes them down on the mahjong paper and presents them. Activity 3 f. The teacher reads out Scenario II (Appendix 3). g. The students are then asked to choose 10 out of the 16 items by consensus among the group members and differentiating between wants and needs in order to lead a good life on the island. After choosing their 10 items, the group representative writes them down on the mahjong paper and presents them. Activity 4 a. The teacher reads out Scenario III (Appendix 4). b. Each group is required to choose 5 items from the 10 items. c. The group members must discuss the items by taking into account their needs and wants in order to ensure a wellbeing and livelyhood on the island. d. Each group lists the items in the form provided (refer to Appendix 5). e. The teacher engages in a question and answer session with the groups: i. Why did you choose those 5 items? ii. Why are those items important for the well-being of the group? iii. Provide an explanation and your opinions as to why the items are either your needs or wants. iv. Is there anyone in your group who has the right to be given more than 5 choices? Why? v. Is there anyone in your group who should have fewer than 5 choices? Why? vi. In your opinion, are there still individuals/groups in Malaysia that do not have access to those 5 items? If yes, who are they? What can be done to help them? 8
