Part I >
Our Role and Responsibilities
Mr. Lin was born in 1937 in Taipei, then under
Japanese rule. In his interview with the NHRC
members on September 1, 2021, he especially
mentioned why he entered politics when he was
young. As the child of a rice-mill owner, Mr. Lin
often met the Songshan local government officials
and policemen. He had the impression that the
government officials then were highly corrupt and
often took advantage of the illiteracy of his parents, so
he began to criticize current events, which naturally
led him to stand for election as a councilor. He said,
My family ran a rice mill, and government officials
(often) came to our home.... For example, they
borrowed rice coupons without returning them.
Because my parents were illiterate, subsidization
officers even took advantage of this and stole rice
coupons from us.
Following the progress of Taiwan’s democratization,
...when I delivered rice to the police station...I often
heard people screaming because they were being
beaten and tortured.... So I hated the government
[at that time]. This was the reason for my entering
politics.6
