HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Implementation steps 1. The students are divided into groups of 8. 2. A situation card is distributed to each group. 3. The students are given 10 minutes to discuss and then act out the situation, which is based on the scenario provided. Scenario A is a form 3 student from Gombak who was recently involved in an accident. His legs were fractured in the accident. On the day of the Form 3 Assessment, he was unable to move quickly to the examination hall since he did not have a wheelchair. Based on A’s situation, discuss what role you can play as a good friend to help him get to the examination hall. Teacher’s questions 1. 2. 3. 4. State the issues found in this case. State the steps that can be taken to handle the problem faced. State where children can make a report. Discuss whether the school has appropriate facilities or access if such situation arises. Reflection: The teacher asks the students to state their reflections on what they have just learned from the activity. He/She provides further clarification of the rights of persons with disabilities, the responsibilities of others and interdependence as well as dignity. Reference notes for the teacher: i. Human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every human being. These rights are stated in the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations on 10 December 1948. ii. The UDHR declares that every human being is born equal in dignity and rights, regardless of race, religion, colour, gender and status. iii. Children’s rights are stated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). iv. There are 54 articles in the CRC. v. Children are persons who are 18 years of age and below.
