Correction Center, the National Human Rights Commission, JAMAKON made a visit to the facility. The Full Time Member of JAMAKON and Chairman of its Children Rights Committee, Kazi Reazul Hoque and the Secretary of JAMAKON M.A.Salam were in the team that made the investigative visit. The Full Time Member spoke to some of the juvenile offenders who had attempted suicide, to understand the scenario. He went to the rooms of other children who had no direct connection to the protestation event and spoke with them. The team also visited the safe home situated in the old building of this center. After analysis of news reports on this topic, center visit and after dialogue with the inmates- it was clear that the ill treatment, physical and mental abuse and insults on children by the management made them bring harm upon them to draw attention of the authorities. There could have been subsequent deaths from this protestation. Some recommendations made from this visit: • Segregate children according to age groups and crimes committed and observe the treatment on them. • Separating children on trial and convicted offenders and also manage education, entertainment, sports etc for them separately. • Assess the age for inmates who look visibly younger than 9 years old and arranging their speedy trial. • For enhancing the overall management there needs to be training for the officials to provide entertainment, counseling services and a childfriendly environment. • To arrange workshops, entertainment, counseling for development of juvenile offenders and to provide adequate nutrition for their physical 22 development. • Establish Children Centers in divisional levels, even in a small capacity. • Demand for apt punishment for the offending officials of the 11th February event.
