International Human Rights Day
Human Rights Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of human rights in re-building the
world we want, with global solidarity, interconnectedness and shared humanity. The annual
celebration of Human Rights Day highlights how people everywhere stand up for human rights.
To celebrate International Human Rights Day, all the offices of NCHR held events and activities
across Pakistan to engage with local communities. NCHR Chairperson Rabiya Javeri Agha visited the
Central Prison in Karachi to meet with, and hear the concerns of, detained foreign prisoners
including Afghan women and children. NCHR’s regional team in Balochistan collaborated with
UNDP and the Social Welfare Department (Government of Balochistan) to honour the
achievements of grassroots women leaders from different communities across Balochistan.
NCHR Regional Office Khyber Pakhtunkhwa hosted a seminar on gender-based violence at the
University of Peshawar that brought together students, professors, representatives of civil society,
members of the transgender community, government officials, lawyers, and media. On Human
Rights Day, NCHR Headquarters honoured the medical workers of Pakistan who were the front-line
warriors in the battle against the devastating floods. Similarly, Member Minorities, dedicated the
day to the sanitary workers of Pakistan and held a small ceremony in this regard.
