HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Implementation steps 1. Each group is given an envelope containing pictures of mass media such as newspapers, radio, TV, computer, handphone, laptop, internet, Facebook, WhatsApp and magazines (see appendix of pictures). 2. Each group is required to choose one type of mass media and discuss the following questions: A. Questions relating to the right to choose sources of information: i. Why did you choose this source of information? ii. What is the importance of the source that you chose? iii. How does the source of information help in disseminating information? B. Questions relating to the benefits of the source of information: i. In your opinion, what are the benefits of the source of information that you chose? ii. Has the source of information helped you in your daily life? iii. Has the source of information enhanced your academic performance? C. Questions relating to dignity and self-esteem: i. In your opinion, can the source of information be harmful to you? ii. Has the source of information contributed to the effort of recognising human dignity? iii. What is the connection between human dignity and human rights? 3. The group leader will present the results of the discussion. Reflection: The teacher summarises the importance of using the media and taking appropriate steps to avoid being harmed. He/She then asks the students to share their reflections on the activity. The teacher must take into account the sensitivities of the students. Reference notes for the teacher: i. Human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every human being. These rights are stated in the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations on 10 December 1948. ii. The UDHR declares that every human being is born equal in dignity and rights, regardless of race, religion, colour, gender and status. iii. Children’s rights are stated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). iv. There are 54 articles in the CRC. v. Children are persons who are 18 years of age and below. 47
