Implementation steps
Instructions
1. Divide the class into groups of 5 students of various races and give each group a
name.
2. Each group is given a sheet of mahjong paper.
3. The students in each group are asked to name traditional foods and write them
down on the mahjong paper.
4. The students must consider racial and religious sensitivities while choosing the
traditional foods so that they do not become an issue.
5. The groups are asked to come up with the lyrics for a song based on a particular type
of food.
6. Each group prepares to do a presentation.
Teacher’s questions
1. Why did you choose that food?
2. Did your group face any problems in choosing the food?
3. Were there any differences of opinion among the group members during the process
of choosing the food? State the differences.
4. What is special about the food chosen?
5. List the ingredients and give the recipe for the food that you chose.
Reflection:
The teacher asks the students to reflect on how to handle their feelings and the racial
and religious sensitivities of their classmates during the activity.
Reference notes for the teacher:
i. Human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every human
being. These rights are stated in the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations on 10 December 1948.
ii. The UDHR declares that every human being is born equal in dignity and rights,
regardless of race, religion, colour, gender and status.
iii. Children’s rights are stated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
iv. There are 54 articles in the CRC.
v. Children are persons who are 18 years of age and below.
The following are among the articles in the CRC that are relevant to the activity:
• Article 2, CRC. Non-discrimination
• Article 24, CRC. Right to health and health services
• Article 12, CRC. Views of the child
• Article 13, CRC. Freedom of expression
• Article 31, CRC. Leisure, recreational and cultural activities
• Article 30, CRC. Rights of children from minority or indigenous groups
• Article 29, CRC. Goals of education
