Similarly, there are numerous programmes initiated by the non-governmental organizations and the private sector with the government institutions and/or individually concerning senior citizen’s rights protection, and such initiatives are acknowledged with appreciation. To this end, in recent years the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, with other stakeholders that work towards promoting and protecting the human rights of senior citizens, has made moves towards improving the protection, promotion and monitoring of the rights of older persons in Sri Lanka. 2.6.4 International Human Rights Day The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka organized a programme to commemorate the International Human Rights Day 2014 at a national level as well as at a regional level. The national level programme was held on the 10th December, 2014 at the Auditorium of the Bandaranaike Center for International Studies (BCIS) at BMICH, Colombo 07 from 9.30am to 1.00pm. The HRCSL decided to adopt the United Nations theme and add more colour to it, with a different touch, while taking the country’s current reconciliation process .
