HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL Implementation steps 1. Place the 2 cones 20 metres apart and label them as ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectively. 2. The students are instructed to gather at Cone A. 3. The students are asked several questions regarding their identity and background. Those who respond positively or ‘yes’ will advance 3 steps. The student who succeeds in arriving at Cone B first will receive the prize. 4. Suggested questions (the teacher can add other questions): (i) Who was born in the month of _____? (ii) Who is the only child in the family? (iii) Who likes sports? (iv) Who can speak more than 1 language? (v) Who was placed higher than 10th in class in the previous year’s examination? (vi) Who can swim well? (vii) Who has an electronic game console at home such as a PS4? (viii) Who has a pet at home? (ix) Whose parents send them to school? 5. Ensure that the students are safe and that everything is under control while the activity is being carried out. Additional activity (optional) 6. Add obstacles or different movement techniques for each different question such as hop, walk crookedly, tip-toe, etc. Discussion/Presentation 7. When the game is over, give the students the opportunity to provide their selfreflection on their recent experience. 8. The teacher may use the questions below as a guide: (i) What are your feelings about the game you have just played? (ii) To the students who were able to advance and continue to participate in the game – what were your feelings concerning those who could not advance at all? (iii) To the students who were still at or close to Cone A - was the game fair for you? Why? (iv) Should the teacher have given the opportunity only to the students who fulfilled the criteria in the questions to win the prize? What are your feelings? (v) How should the game be played to provide equal opportunities for all the students? (vi) Give examples of discrimination that you know. (vii) In your opinion, what are the reasons why a person is marginalised? 17
