during the assemblies/rallies. In 2016, the Commission made several recommendations for the improvement of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 based on the Commission’s monitoring of the rallies. The Commission took note of the government’s stance as expressed in the government’s response to the Commission Annual Report 2016 that there is no need for the provisions in the Act to be reviewed. The purpose of the Commission’s monitoring is to ensure state compliance with the United Nations Basic Principles and Guidelines on Development-Based Evictions and Displacement and other International laws. In some of the cases, the Commission was involved in facilitating discussions between the enforcement personnel and the aggrieved residents.
