Ka Mua, Ka Muri This kōwhaiwhai represents many themes that the Human Rights Commission encompasses. The look of the graphic is derived from the traditional art of whakairo. Having the whakapapa feel within the line strokes also ties back to being Te Tiriti based. As for the design itself, there are patterns of puhoro and unaunahi. The Waka Hourua symbolises the Commission, the moana is the path that the Waka Hourua has to navigate through. There are human figures depicted in parts of the kowhaiwhai that are inspired by Cliff Whiting’s mahi toi. These are to embody the workers within the Human Rights Commission. Overall this kowhaiwhai represents the haerenga to be Tiriti based. Visually representing the journey and development within the Commission.
