The Commission has also started to explore a possible new strategy of reaching the people by obtaining a dedicated page or column on human rights in selected newspapers. 3. SOCIAL MEDIA In keeping with the fast expansion of communication technology, the Commission is always active in optimising the use of the social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, to provide first-hand information as well as to enhance public accessibility to current human rights issues. CHAPTER 2 Through these platforms, the Commission also actively monitors current events involving human rights; this was reflected through live updates from the Commission’s Facebook and Twitter accounts during the recent BERSIH 5.0 rally on 19 November. The Commission will continue to utilise social media, especially Facebook and Twitter, to better promote human rights to the public at large. 4. HUMAN RIGHTS AWARDS (HRA) This year, the Commission once again recognised and celebrated individuals, organisations, agencies and business entities for their outstanding ventures that have, in some ways, promoted the realisation and advancement of human rights of either certain vulnerable groups or the general public in Malaysia. These individuals and groups were presented with the Commission’s Human Rights Award at a ceremony held on 8 December at the Institute for Diplomacy and Foreign Relations (IDFR) in Kuala Lumpur. There were six (6) award recipients for five (5) award categories honoured this year. The award categories included the Individual Award, Civil Society Organisation Award, Media Award, Government Award and Business Entity Award. The award recipients were selected from amongst a list of 51 nominees whose names were received after the Commission’s advertisement to call for nominations, in addition to numerous others considered by the Commission through its own research. The 2016 Human Rights Award recipient(s) for each of the category were as follows: i) The Individual Award The Individual Award is conferred to an individual who has demonstrated significant achievements in serving the cause of human rights in the community on pro-bono basis.
