He was conferred with this award for his extensive print and online news articles on the rights and plight of vulnerable groups around the Country, especially in Sarawak. The interest of this Miri-born journalist to write about issues related to human rights began to develop during his travels and visits to rural areas in Sarawak during a 2-year posting with the Statistic Department. This had encouraged him to write on various exposés on matters affecting vulnerable groups such as the rights of indigenous peoples to land, right to safety, rights of persons with disabilities, freedom of religion and workers’ rights. The Government Agency Award This Award is presented to a Malaysian Government Agency or statutory body that has demonstrated human rights best practices during their course of implementing policies, regulations, programmes and services. This year, this award went to the One District One Industry Programme (SDSI) which is an initiative by the Malaysia Handicraft Development Corporation. The programme that was inspired by the Japanese ‘One Village One Product’ (OVOP), was initiated with 20 pilot projects involving 10 states in Malaysia. The initiative aspires to create employment opportunities for communities through local products to generate sustainable income. In addition, this programme seeks to diversity the business activities of communities such as production of raw materials, product processing and logistics. The Commission had conferred this Award to the Programme as it has the potential to advance the right to an adequate standard of living, especially for poor communities in rural areas including the indigenous peoples. v) Business Entity Award The Business Entity Award is presented to a business enterprise that has demonstrated exemplary human rights best practices in is service delivery and business conduct.
