3.58 Almost 62 per cent (476 prisoners) reported having undergone medical
assessments in prison, but only 21 per cent (158 prisoners) requested to be
examined by a female medical doctor or female medical staff.

3.59 At the end of the questionnaires, the Commission also provided an
opportunity to the respondents to highlight any other issues of concerns or
share their opinions- whether related or unrelated to the study.
3.60 10 per cent (571 prisoners) requested for an improvement in the current
healthcare system in prison while 66 per cent (3,609 prisoners) did not
provide suggestions.
3.61 5 per cent (252 prisoners) proposed that prison nutrition be improved and
complained of not receiving clean and healthy food, while 3 per cent (157
prisoners) suggested that the Prisons Department must ensure sufficient
medication in the prison’s dispensary.
3.62 8 per cent (418 prisoners) complained of the failure of the prison’s
management to effectively handle health needs in prison, while 3 per cent
(141 prisoners) were complained of abusive treatment by prison staff.82
