The Member Punjab and his team visited the following jails in the year 2022; District Jail Lahore, 2nd February 2022 NCHR has visited district jail on several occasions. During the visit it was found that the jail suffers from overcrowding, housing almost twice the number of prisoners for which it was built. Out of the total population of 3814 prisoners, NCHR discovered that only 250 were convicted, while 93.5% of the prison population (3516 adult inmates and 48 juvenile inmates) were under trial. The issue of drugs at the jail was alarming with approximately 1000 drug addicts. Central Jail Faisalabad, 30th June 2022 Central Jail Faisalabad has the capacity to hold 1885 prisoners, however, NCHR found that the jail was housing 2542 prisoners. Out of the total jail population of 2542 prisoners, only 1257 were convicted while 880 adult inmates and 34 juvenile prisoners were still under trial. NCHR’s team also met with paraplegic prisoner Mr. Abdul Basit who has been on death row for several years now and had a detailed meeting with the doctors at DHQ Faisalabad, where he had been shifted, regarding his medical history.
