HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Implementation steps Activity 1: Listening (20 minutes) • The students are placed apart from one another inside or outside the classroom. • The students are told to be silent for 3 minutes and to listen to the sounds around them. • They are then instructed to write down or make a note of all the sounds they hear. • The teacher identifies the student who has noted the most sounds heard and the student who has listed the fewest sounds. Activity 2: Acting “What did you say just now?” (40 minutes) Instructions: • • • The students are divided into groups of 4. One of the students covers his/her ears so that he/she cannot hear. Another student gives instructions in a low voice to the student who has his/her ears covered: o “Close the door.” o “Hop forward.” o “Draw a cat on the blackboard.” o • “Untie your shoelaces.” Another student tries to help the ‘deaf’ student to follow the instructions if he/she is unable to do so. (Perform a variety of actions since the student cannot hear or have him/her observe lip movements.) Activity 3: Charade (45 minutes) Instructions: One student acts out a sentence or phrase using only gestures. The other students have to guess what he/she is communicating. • Divide the students into groups of 7. • • Sub-divide each group into smaller groups of 3. One student will be the judge. • The students are allowed to ask questions but the actor can only respond by nodding or shaking his/her head. • The ‘judge’ will give marks to the group that guessed correctly. The students in one subgroup take turns playing the part of a PWD and act out 1 sentence or phrase without saying anything. The other subgroup will try to guess what the sentence or phrase is. The subgroups then reverse their roles. 31
