HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL Implementation steps 1. Divide the students into 3 groups. 2. The teacher prepares clippings of short sentences which are placed in the box. Clippings of suitable sentences are provided in the appendix to the activity. 3. There are two rounds to the game. The first round involves charades: each group chooses a representative who will be asked by the teacher to randomly select the clipping of a sentence from the box. In front of all the groups, the representative has to act out or give hints through gestures to explain the content of the sentence he/she has picked. The representative is not allowed to speak. The adhesive tape may be used with care so that the representative does not speak. The group that correctly guesses the sentence first gets one mark. The group representatives take turns. 4. In the second round, the representative randomly chooses the clipping of a sentence from the box and all the groups will try to guess the contents of the clipping. This time, the representative can speak, but he/she must not say the exact word in the clipping directly. The representative can only give hints or explain the characteristics of the words that he/she is attempting to make known. Whichever group guesses the sentence in the clipping first gets one mark. The group representatives take turns. Discussion/Presentation 5. At the end of the activity, the teacher talks to the students about their experience while playing the game. The discussion can be directed towards the challenges faced by the students if they are not allowed to speak. 6. The teacher can then discuss Article 13 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) that states that children have the right to voice their views freely, especially on matters related to child rights, and that adults must consider their views. Nevertheless, the teacher must emphasise that the right must be used responsibly and not to cause harm to another through actions such as slandering, mocking and instigating hatred. Conclusion 7. The teacher concludes the day’s lesson by stressing the rights of the child as well as human rights learned from the lesson. 8. The teacher also needs to apply the values learned from the lesson. 27
