Training Module on the Right to Mental Health
Training Module on the Right to Mental Health for Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)
for Civil Society Organizations
PFA is NOT:
භ Something only professionals can do
භ Professional counseling
භ Psychological debriefing
ӑ No detailed discussion of the distressing event
භ Asking people to analyze what happened or put
time and events in order
Although PFA involves being available to listen to
people’s stories, it is NOT pressing people to tell you
their feelings or reactions to an event.

Why PFA?
People do better long-term if they:
• Feel safe, calm, hopeful, and connected to
others
• Have access to social, physical, and
emotional support
• Regain a sense of control by being able to
help themselves

Responses to Crisis Events
People may have very different
reactions to an event (Flooding,
earthquake, fire, accidents, death)
What factors influence how
someone responds?
