Australian Human Rights Commission Respect at Uni Interim Report December 2024 Appendix III Terms of Reference Respect at Uni: Study into antisemitism, Islamophobia, racism and the experience of First Nations People Advisory Committee 1 Acknowledgement The Commission acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land it works on, the Gadigal Peoples of the Eora Nation. The Commission recognises their continuing connection to the land and waters, a connection that has existed since time immemorial. The Commission acknowledges the impacts of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and acknowledges the leadership of First Nations individuals and organisations in advancing the work of anti-racism and addressing racial discrimination. The Commission pays its respects to Elders, past and present and extends that respect to all First Nations Peoples across the continent. 2 Background In response to a recommendation from the Australian Universities Accord, the Australian Government has funded the Australian Human Rights Commission, to undertake a groundbreaking study, Respect at Uni: Study into Antisemitism, Islamophobia, Racism and the experiences of First Nations People (the Study). The Study will be led by Mr Giridharan Sivaraman, Race Discrimination Commissioner. This project will address all forms of racism with a focus on investigating the prevalence, nature and impact of individual and systemic racism within universities, including those universities with dual sector operations, in Australia. This will be a first step in the design and development of a national, longitudinal approach to measuring and tracking racism in the tertiary sector.
