About SUHAKAM:
The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) is a national human rights institution
established on 9 September 1999 by an Act of Parliament with the mandate to promote and
protect human rights in Malaysia. SUHAKAM’s statutory functions include promoting human
rights awareness and education, inquiring into complaints of human rights violations and
advising the government on laws and policies as well as on accession to international human
rights treaties. SUHAKAM is accredited in full compliance with the Paris Principles with ‘A’
status under the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) accreditation
system.
