Intersex NGOs have made submissions to UN mechanisms and to NHRIs to advocate for the right to recognition before the law. For example, the Intersex Trust Aotearoa New Zealand made a submission in 2013 as part of New Zealand’s Universal Periodic Review. It recommended that intersex adults should have the right to choose to amend sex details on official documents, based solely on self-identification, without any requirements for medical treatment and without the need to resort to a court process.
