ii. Self-inspection in the Supply Chain During the Kaohsiung seminar, the NHRC invited Andrew Lee, Vice President of Bureau Veritas (BV) Taiwan, to share his experience with third-party impartial audits. He emphasized that establishing a manageable and traceable fishery system is a crucial starting point. Responding to concerns raised by shipowners and intermediaries during the discussion, Lee explained that these issues are not new, having been encountered by land-based factories over a decade ago: “When companies like Foxconn, Wistron, and Compal expanded into China, they had to comply with factory inspections from Apple and HP. What challenges did they face? Workers came to the factory to earn money, but HP and Apple required that monthly overtime hours not exceed a certain limit. What happened? The workers left for other factories where they could earn more. In distant water fisheries, however, such transitions are not as smooth due to the limited space on fishing vessels, which makes this issue particularly challenging.” the Action Plan for Fisheries and Human Rights: Alliance Urges New Government to Address Core Issues, Eliminate Discrimination, and Improve Fishers' Isolation at Sea to Restore Taiwan's Global Reputation in Distant water fisheries,” June 5, 2024.
