This year, the Individual Award was presented to Dr. Madhusudhan Shammugam, a medical practitioner who heads out to the streets of Kuala Lumpur at night to provide free medical care for the homeless and the needy. The service he provides has enabled numerous vagrants and urban poor to enjoy their right to access medical care. CHAPTER 2 The 34-year old doctor who works at his clinic in Cheras by day, began his charity work as a co-founder of the Genie Foundation, helping out children and orphanages and the elderly retirement homes. Later, he joined the volunteer organisation Kechara Soup Kitchen to provide free food and medical care to the homeless. Taking a step further, Dr. Madhusudhan, who is also fondly known as the “Teddy Bear Doctor” formed the Teddy Mobile Clinic dedicated to providing free medical care for the homeless and urban poor. ii) The Organisation/Group Award The Organisation/Group Award is to honour a non-profit organisation that has demonstrated significant achievements in serving the cause of human rights in the community on pro-bono basis. The 2016 Organisation/Group Award was conferred to the Centre for Environment, Technology and Development Malaysia (CETDEM) for their tireless work to improving the environmental quality, hence supporting the human right to a clean and safe environment. CETDEM which was founded on 25 April 1985, addresses diverse environmental issues such as the impacts of long term climate change on Malaysian society, sustainable energy, sustainable transport, organic farming and sustainable development. CETDEM is not only active locally, but also internationally and has been represented at various international fora such as the UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and many more. iii) The Media Award The Media Award is presented to individuals and/or agencies from the Malaysian print, online and broadcast media to acknowledge their effective and significant human rights reporting/documentary and programme. This year, the Commission presented this award to two persons. The first recipient was Ms. Boo Su-Lyn who was given the award for her frank and critical online newspaper columns relating to the impediments of realising various human rights in Malaysia.
