The United Nations Human Rights Council reviewed the information it received and announced its recommendations in January 2014. The Council praised Aotearoa New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to improving the realisation of rights for all people and said that there was much to learn from our country’s experience. It also made over 100 recommendations for New Zealand to act on. The recommendations included putting clear measures in place to prevent inequality of outcomes in health, education, work and income, and criminal justice; as well as to limit discrimination; and prevent violence against women and children. The New Zealand Government responded to these recommendations in May 2014. It has committed to work with the Human Rights Commission, non-government organisations and civil society to develop Aotearoa New Zealand’s second National Plan of Action for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights. The Commission will lead and coordinate the development of the plan which will contain actions that the Commission, Government, communities and wider society will take to improve the realisation of rights and freedoms for all people in Aotearoa New Zealand.
