Proposed Withdrawal of Amendments to Employment Act 1967 concerning Pre-Employment Discrimination (see Chapter on Workers) Recommendation SUHAKAM commends the government for increasingly consulting with SUHAKAM in the law reform process. SUHAKAM trusts that this practice of good governance continues, in line with SUHAKAM’s statutory role of advising and assisting the government in the formulation of laws and policies. However, SUHAKAM hopes that the engagement occurs earlier. That it is more meaningful and is on a broader scope of laws and policies, including emerging human rights issues such as climate change, ageing and technology. 2. ENGAGEMENT WITH THE JUDICIARY a) Judicial Colloquium The Judiciary, as one of the three branches of government, plays an integral role in the promotion and protection of human rights, and ultimately the fulfilment of Malaysia’s international obligations. It can fulfil such a role mainly through the application of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) principles and international human rights normative standards in the judicial process. To this end, SUHAKAM - in collaboration with UN agencies in Malaysia and with the support of the Malaysian Judiciary - organised a judicial colloquium themed “Applying International Human Rights Principles and Norms in the Judicial Process.” The objectives were to: • • Create a platform for judges to impart and exchange views and knowledge on human rights and its application in the administration of justice; Discuss the application of international human rights treaties and instruction in the context of the administration of justice in Malaysia;
