Engaging with the UN on reprisals for cooperating with the UN
Over the past decade, the UN has increased its efforts to address reprisals against HRDs for cooperating
with bodies in the UN family. The UN has created specific mechanisms for this purpose:
The Assistant Secretary General for Human Rights is tasked with leading these efforts. The ASG
receives allegations, communicates directly with high level officials on cases, and advocates more
broadly for the preventive measures. Every year, the Secretary General issues a report on reprisals
against HRDs for engaging with the UN. NHRIs can submit information to the report, and support
HRDs to do so.
