BASIS FOR NHRI INVOLVEMENT PARIS PRINCIPLES Competence and responsibilities 3. A national institution shall, inter alia, have the following responsibilities: (f) To assist in the formulation of programmes for the teaching of, and research into, human rights and to take part in their execution in schools, universities and professional circles; (g) To publicize human rights and efforts to combat all forms of discrimination, in particular racial discrimination, by increasing public awareness, especially through information and education and by making use of all press organs. AMMAN DECLARATION NHRIs agree to the following broad principles and areas of work: • Promote the realization of the human rights of women and girls, including as found in CEDAW, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other human rights norms and standards, into national law and policies (paragraph 7). • Undertake education, promotion and awareness-raising activities on the human rights of women and girls, gender equality and relevant international standards. Particular attention should be paid to eliminating prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women. NHRIs will work to eliminate stigma attached to women and girls who come forward when their rights are violated (paragraph 12).
