HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Implementation steps 1. The students are divided into small groups. 2. The students are given the choice of coloured cards for specific stations. 3. The students carry out the tasks on the instruction cards at each station. Station 1: Complete 5 Moral Education questions. Station 2: Game of “Mongoose and Chicken” Station 3: List 5 English words based on the alphabet cards provided. - Each word must have a minimum of 5 letters, e.g. R-I-G-H-T - Words must be related to human rights. Station 4: Game of shoe/milk tin attack • Divide each group into two. • Group 1 will build a tower of shoes/milk tins. • Group 2 will try to demolish the tower of shoes/milk tins. • The groups reverse their roles. Station 5: List 5 types of: • Traditional clothes in Malaysia • Traditional foods in Malaysia • Traditional games in Malaysia • Festivals in Malaysia • Rights of the child Teacher’s Questions: 1. As a child, did you find the activities you carried out satisfactory and fun? 2. Are you given the opportunity to carry out such activities outside school hours? 3. Do you need others to make your life more enjoyable? 4. Do you feel comfortable living under pressure? Reflection: The students are given the opportunity to reflect on their feelings when carrying out the activities and to relate them to the rights of the child. Reference notes for the teacher: i. Human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to every human being. These rights are stated in the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) adopted by the United Nations on 10 December 1948. ii. The UDHR declares that every human being is born equal in dignity and rights, regardless of race, religion, colour, gender and status. iii. Children’s rights are stated in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). iv. There are 54 articles in the CRC. v. Children are persons who are 18 years of age and below. 79
