HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Implementation steps • • The students are divided into groups of 8. Each student is given a handout of the case study “Why Call Me Fatty?” Case Study: “Why Call Me Fatty?’ R is a form 3 student who comes from Sogamana Estate. He is big-sized and does not look like a form 3 student. R is also weak in Mathematics and always causes trouble. He walks up and down the classroom and disturbs the other students. R’s attitude made the teacher so angry that he called R ‘Fatty’. Thostrac teacher knew that if he called R by that name, R would be ashamed and stay quiet. R is called frequently by that name and soon his classmates begin calling him by that name. R is often bullied. His stationery is often taken by his classmates and not returned. The classmates will sometimes make fun of him by sticking a piece of paper with the words “I am Fatty” onto his shirt without his knowledge and laugh at him. R is often outcast by the teacher and his classmates. This situation has caused R to lose his self-esteem and self-confidence and to avoid his classmates. He feels sad and lonely. This has caused his academic performance to decline. He does not want to go to school and gives all sorts of excuses to be absent. Questions Please discuss the following questions: 1. State the issues found in the case. 2. What steps can be taken to handle the problems that have been identified? 3. Based on the UDHR and CRC, what are the rights of the child in the case study who was being harassed? 4. Give the name of any agency/place where the child can lodge a complaint. Presentation Format 1. Each group shall discuss the topic that has been decided and the matters related to it according to the format provided. 2. Please use the material supplied to assist the discussion, especially the CRC. 3.
