HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL Implementation steps Activity 1 1. The teacher prepares 5 small pieces of paper for each of the 5 different colours chosen (green, blue, yellow, white and pink). 2. The teacher writes the questions provided on the coloured pieces of paper (set of 5 questions per colour). Each set is numbered 1 – 5 and hidden in specific places in the hall and school compound. 3. The class is divided into 5 groups of 5 to 8. Each group represents one colour, matching the coloured papers. 4. Each group must answer the questions stated on its piece of paper starting from the paper numbered 1. After the questions are answered correctly, the teacher will give the key word for the paper marked number 2. The activity is repeated until all the students finish answering the question on the paper marked number 5. 5. The group that finishes answering all the questions first is declared the winner of the activity. Proposed Questions i. A is blind. He wants to cross the road but there are piles of stones along his route. What right has A been denied? ii. Y is an autistic person and wishes to work for Company B. He attends an interview as scheduled. During the interview, the panel shows interest in Y and agrees to employ him. What right is being upheld by Company B? iii. J is a slow learner. He is passing by the area where illegal motor racing takes place when the police carry out arrests. He is detained because he is suspected to be involved in the activity. He is taken to the police station for questioning. What right should J be accorded? iv. O is a deaf-mute. He has a matter to settle at a government agency. At the information counter, the agency worker is unable to help O because he does not know sign language. The building does not have any video providing the relevant information in sign language either. What right is O unable to access fully? v. M has a leg defect and always uses a cane to move around. Every afternoon, he goes to the field to watch his friends play. He wishes to play with them but is often made fun of by them. What right is M being denied by the friends? vi. G has been an intelligent child since he was little but was involved in a road accident at the age of 4. As a result of the accident, G is paralysed from the waist down. G’s parents have decided to pay a teacher to teach G at home (home schooling). What right has G’s parents emphasised? 131
