2.2 Decide Vision and Purpose statements The Vision sets out your long-term aspiration for gender equality Your Purpose Statement is what your NHRI will do in order to achieve your vision. The Vision and Purpose of a strategy are usually short statements of no more than one sentence – sometimes part of a sentence. Alignment with your NHRI’s vision, purpose, mandate and values is important. That will ensure that your gender strategy is an integral component of your NHRI’s work, and in turn it will support your NHRI reach its strategic outcomes. As an NHRI, you will also ensure alignment with your legislative mandate and international human rights standards. Your Vision Statement Most NHRIs have a human rights vision. It is good practice to align your vision with that. For example: VISION: “An Asia Pacific where human rights are universally enjoyed and respected.” (APF) GENDER VISION: An Asia Pacific where gender rights are universally enjoyed and respected. Your Purpose Statement Once you have decided your vision, your purpose statement will be related to it. This is a brief overview about what your NHRI will do in order to achieve your vision. It is the NHRI’s public statement about the role it will play, the focus of its efforts, and the change it seeks to make toward gender equality. For example: VISION: An Asia Pacific where gender rights are universally enjoyed and respected. PURPOSE STATEMENT: To advance, protect, and promote gender rights across Asia and the Pacific.
