About SUHAKAM:
The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) was established in 1999 via the
Human Rights Commission of Malaysia Act 1999 (hereinafter referred to as Act 597). In
accordance with Act 597, SUHAKAM is a statutory body in Malaysia, independent from the
Government and could only be dissolved through another repealing Act of Parliament, and
publicly funded through the Government. At the same time, such legal status also affords
SUHAKAM the legitimacy to exercise its statutory mandate.
The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) through its SubCommittee on Accreditation (SCA) reviews and accredits national human rights institutions in
compliance with the Paris Principles every five years. SUHAKAM has been a member of
GANHRI since 2002 and maintained its ‘A’ status until present time, denoting ‘full compliance’
with the Paris Principles.
