does the Government plan to undertake to expand the leisure and recreational facilities for children and promote safety of the facilities? Safety of the child 1) Current situation 87. The deaths of children aged 14 or below due to safety accidents decreased from 15.3 per 100,000 population in 1999 to 6.0 in 2008, but the rate is still higher than the OECD average (in 2005) and places Korea in the 3rd standing among the OECD member nations (based on the 2009 data published by the Statistics Korea). When compared to some EU member states, Korea was 3.2 times higher with 8.7 deaths than Sweden with 2.7. Meanwhile, as the statistical data on children's safety accidents are only concerned with the children aged 14 or below, it is difficult to measure the status of the children aged 15 or older. Table 4. OECD country standings in child fatalities from safety accidents Year 2005 OECD average 5.6 1st Mexico (13.6) 2nd USA (9.2) 3rd Korea (8.7) 1991~1995 10.5 Korea (25.6) Mexico (19.8) Portugal (17.8) * Source: Statistics Korea, OECD Intercountry Comparison of Child Fatalities from Safety Accidents, 2009 2) Questions 88. Does the Government have an accurate understanding about the current status of safety accidents among the children aged 15~18? Does the Government have a plan to adjust the reference ages for statistical purpose in order to have a clearer understanding? And what measures does the Government undertake or plan to undertake to reduce children's safety accidents? - 23 -
