Main objective of the assessment is to gain a better insight into current situation of human trafficking in the Maldives and to bring the issue of trafficking to the forefront and increase national attention to the issue. The preliminary findings determine that there are both locals and migrant workers as victims of human trafficking in the country and they are Chapter: Article 8: Prohibition of Slavery 66. Considering the fact that Maldives has been ranked in the tier 2 watch list of the Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report for two consecutive years and being a member of the International Labour Organization (ILO), it’s time the State takes swift measures to manage the issues related to the migrant worker population of the country. In recent years, the State has acknowledged the existence of human trafficking and other issues faced by the migrant workers. The State has also taken initiative of drafting a bill on human trafficking with the help of Australian Attorney General’s Office. Maldives also agreed to ratify the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (ICPRMWF) during the UPR process. 34
