HUMAN RIGHTS MODULE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL Implementation steps 1. Divide the students into groups of 6 to 8. 2. Each group selects a representative to draw a piece of paper containing a sentence from the box. Examples of sentences can be found on page 65. 3. Instruct the other members of the group to stand in a line with some space between one another. 4. Give 1 minute for the representative to memorise the sentence pulled out from the box. 5. Then the representative must run to the first member of his/her group and whisper the sentence that he/she has memorised. 6. The first member must then whisper the sentence he/she heard from the representative to the second member of the group who then whispers it to the next member. This is continued up to the last member of the group. 7. The last member of each group must stand in front of the class in the order in which the groups completed the task. 8. Ask the last member of each group to say the sentence he/she heard. Compare this with the sentence that was written on the paper drawn from the box. Discussion/Presentation 9. At the end of the activity, give the students time to self-reflect on the activity that they carried out. Give them an opportunity to share their experiences when conveying the information to their friends, the difficulty they faced and how they handled the problem. You may use the questions below as a guide: (i) Do you know where your classmates live? (ii) Do you know if any of your friends walk to school? (iii) Are there any differences between you and your classmates that make you uncomfortable? Or do you feel that everyone is equal? (iv) Have you ever felt left out by your other classmates? Conclusion 10. The teacher concludes the day’s lesson by stressing the rights of the child as well as human rights learned from the lesson. 11. The teacher needs to apply the values learned from the lesson. 12. The teacher can share additional information and specific facts concerning human rights and children’s rights. 64
