A Year in Review
Amid the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic, Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples have continued to work on behalf of their communities to face
this unprecedented health challenge and to progress health equality.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continued to seek change
and drive self-determination in health and community service policies and
programs, contributing to several notable developments in Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander health policy over the last 12 months.
These include the roll-out of the new National Agreement on Closing the Gap
through detailed implementation plans from each of the parties and the release
of a new 10-year National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan,
developed by the Australian Government in partnership with Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Community response to COVID-19
Our communities are strong and resilient and have
responded rapidly and effectively to the pandemic
when they have been trusted, enabled and resourced by
governments to lead the way. We need governments to
work together with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health
Organisations to support culturally safe delivery of vaccines
and improve data collection to increase vaccination
coverage as quickly as we can.”
