Annual Report 2016 The meeting discussed the current scenario of child abuse, in particular the heinous crime against and killing of the children. The meeting urged the government to bring the perpetrators before justice in order to bring back the trust of the citizens and also to ensure Rule of Law in the society. The meeting also urged the civil societies and NGOs to come forward and to raise voice unitedly to stop children killings, expressing its deepest concerns over the situation. The meeting also discussed about the draft legislation of the proposed child commission, its mandate, functions, accountability and its role in preventing child abuse. 3.1.3. Seminar/ Workshop NHRC Organizes Seminar on SDGs: Gender Equality On 02 November 2016, NHRC organized a seminar on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Gender Equality at Hotel Radisson Blu, Dhaka. Mr. Kazi Reazul Hoque, Chairman, NHRC chaired the seminar. At first, Ms. Nurun Naher Osmani, Member, NHRC and Chair of the Women’s Rights Thematic Committee of NHRC delivered welcome address. Mr. Akhter Hossain, Member, NHRC presented key note paper on “SDGs: Gender Equality and Women Empowerment”. He mentioned that major changes were required to be made in the inheritance law. Kazi Reazul Hoque, Honorable Chairman of NHRC said “UNCEDAW Committee has identified the most vulnerable areas where we should work and government, NHRC and CSOs are very active and working hard for the empowerment of women in the country.” Mentioning about Government’s reservation on Article 2 and 16 (1)/c of CEDAW, honorable Chairman said that Bangladesh government should withdraw these reservations as it is complying with the provisions in other ways. So, this is the high time to fully comply with all the provisions of CEDAW. The distinguished guests applauded the strong role played by the NHRC regarding this. 19
