The financial aid is RM300 per month and the aid is provided to the
caregivers caring for their disabled or chronically ill relative.47 The
assistance provided to caregivers whose monthly income is less than
RM3,000.48

Artificial aid/Orthopaedics
The assistance is provided for those whose income is less than
RM720.00 per month, a person with disabilities registered with
the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia and recommended and
verified by a medical practitioner.49 Among the assistance provided are
hearing aid, wheelchair and artificial limbs.
42. In addition, other services such as counselling are also provided by the
Department of Social Welfare Malaysia. At the same time, the Department
also provides funding/grant to non-governmental organisations that
operate centres for older persons.
43. Besides the government funded care centres for older persons, there
are private and non-governmental organisation which offer care and
protection for older persons including residential/institution and
non-residential/community types of services. The institution care for
older
persons
in
Malaysia
is
governed
and
licensed

principally by two laws i.e. under the Care Centres Act 1993 and the

Private Healthcare Facilities and Services Act 1998 and Regulations 2006.
Nevertheless, the number of registered care centres under these two Acts
is fewer compared to the existing number of care centres in Malaysia,
either because of failure to register or such centres having been
incorporated associeties or companies perceive themselves as being
governed by the laws relating thereto.
44. According to data provided by the Department of Social Welfare
Department as shown in Table 12, there are 211 registered older persons
care centres. Out of the 211 registered care centres, 149 are private and
62are non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Also out of these 211,
25 are day care centres whereas 186 are residential care centres. (Please
see Table 12 for the total number of the registered care centres for older
