o Over time, the spiritual dimension has been incorporated into this
model, as one’s spiritual history was recognized to be as important
as the other dimensions, in health and sickness. It acknowledges that
an individual’s spirituality could affect the quality of life and how a
person will cope in the face of illness. Spirituality cuts across religious
experiences and envelops the belief and recognition of a higher being,
beyond a person’s physical and sensory experiences. This higher being
gives one a sense of purpose in life and connects each and every one
of us, and is embodied in one’s religious practices. The dimension
also includes the role of spirituality in the person’s life, religious or
spiritual affiliations, and the community’s support with its members
experiencing mental health problems.
Spirituality and Mental Health
• Spirituality and religiosity are deeply ingrained in the Filipino culture and
are important aspects in the lives of many. Religious teachings often
influence the belief of mental health and well-being, including the attitude
towards mental illness. It also influences an individual’s readiness to seek
help and adhere to treatment.
• Spirituality involves the belief and recognition that there is a higher being,
beyond a person’s physical and sensory experiences, that gives one a
sense of purpose and meaning of life, and connects each and every one of
us. Religiosity, on the other hand, refers to the devoutness of an individual
to one’s religious beliefs, principles, and activities.
• Spiritual practices involve seeking meaning and purpose in life, showing
compassion to oneself and others, seeking happiness and satisfaction
beyond material possessions, and aspiration towards being an enlightened
individual.
• An individual’s reasons for turning to spirituality may include their quest
to find meaning and purpose in life, to gain a fresh perspective over so
many things happening in one’s life, to cope with stress and other mental
health problems, to find strength and courage, and to find hope amidst
adversity.
Importance of Spirituality in Mental Health
• A person’s spiritual needs may become apparent in times of crises:
sickness, death of a loved one, natural disasters, loss of livelihood, or
the feeling of loss of control. A person often turns to spirituality to find
meaning and answers to their adversity, and at times this keeps a person
moving—knowing that a higher being guides them, and the experiences
are part of the journey towards strengthening one’s relationship with the
higher power. Moreover, it also provides a positive coping mechanism that
