In 2015, four journalists from the Associated Press (AP) conducted a year-long investigation into the inhumane treatment of fishermen trapped on the remote Indonesian island of Benjina. The “Seafood from Slaves” series of reports1 exposed how seafood sold in American supermarkets and restaurants came from enslaved and exploited fishermen in Southeast Asia. More than 2,000 slave workers from Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand had been tricked into being sold into slavery in Indonesia where they worked long hours under atrocious conditions2. 1.
