The right to social security of the workers in the informal economy/ sector
no cisgender females; a significant majority at 72.73 percent has no persons with diverse
sexual orientation and gender identity, expression, and sex characteristics (SOGIESC) in
their households. There are 4.55 percent households with children aged 14 years old and
below while 18.19 percent with senior citizens or older persons.
The participants stressed that the main reason for working in the informal economy is
to find alternatives to generate income, specifically for those who were not able to complete
formal education122. They declared that they “lack” the skills necessary for employment;123
thus, they capitalize instead on their soft skills such as cooking124 and selling cooked food. For
the older persons, they shared they are constrained by their age to find formal employment.125
The persons with disabilities have assumed that since formal employment requires a necessary
skill set, they might not be able to meet them so they take advantage of other income streams
to provide for the needs of the family126. Other workers opt for informal engagements to avoid
the tedious process of securing the documentary requirements from different government
agencies required to apply for a job.127 Running a small convenience or “sari-sari” store is
another option because some averred that with a small capital, they can already start up a sarisari store128 and that there is no or minimal loss in this business. It is also beneficial for the
family as when they do not have a viand for the day, they can just get something from the
store.129 It is good to note that others recognize that working in the informal economy helps
people living in poverty.130
Participants find numerous advantages in working in the informal economy. On top of
the list are the absence of a superior and having control over the working hours.131 This
notwithstanding, workers see drawbacks.
