Training Module on the Right to Mental Health for the Security Sector • Stress is a common phenomenon being experienced by almost all individuals. Stress may be viewed as a real or interpreted threat to the physiological and psychological response, producing mental tension or physiological reactions leading to illness. It is a physical or psychological state which increases the demands for adjustment from the individual. Occupational stress is defined as any discomfort which is felt and perceived at a personal level and triggered by instances, events or situations that are too intense and frequent in nature so as to exceed a person’s coping capabilities and resources to handle them adequately. Simply put, occupational stress is stress at work. Often a stressor can lead to the body having various disturbances, which in turn will result in physical and mental strain of a person. The past 25 years of research has established the complexity of the construct that places the individual stress experience within a larger organizational context of people’s relations to their work. Recently, the work on burnout has expanded internationally and has led to new conceptual models. 12
