Work to implement the findings of the Ministerial Review1 has helped to make the Commission a safer, more inclusive and respectful workplace. The Commission is committed to continuously improving our workplace. This year marked a significant renewal of the Commission’s leadership. Michael Timmins was appointed Director of Human Rights Proceedings on 11 March 2019. Saunoamaali’i Karanina Sumeo began as Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner on 5 November 2018 and Paul Hunt took up the position of Chief Commissioner on 14 January 2019. The Commission is deeply grateful to Disability Rights Commissioner Paula Tesoriero for her dedication and leadership, both as the Acting Chief Commissioner and Acting Race Relations Commissioner from July 2018 to January 2019, in addition to her disability portfolio. We acknowledge and thank the staff of the Human Rights Commission for their commitment over the past year. Our organisation is built on the skill, passion and dedication of our staff. We also acknowledge the strong and vital support we have received from the many community organisations and individuals, who are committed to enhancing the human rights of all New Zealanders. Working with Mäori as tangata whenua and the diverse range of communities of our country, we will continue to strive to improve human rights outcomes to ensure a dignified life for all New Zealanders.
