Seminar presentation by Andrew Lee, Vice President of BV Taiwan.
Vice President Lee explained how BV adapted the lessons learned from
land-based factory inspections to fishing vessels, starting with traceable
products:
“The image above represents the food industry supply chain, which is
widely used across the industry. Frankly, seafood products are no
different, except for the first step: fishing. Unlike cultivating rice,
vegetables, or fruits on land, seafood involves mobility, making fishing
methods crucial. Due to this distinction, we aim to provide evidence to
show that our clients' catch is free from fish aggregating devices
(FADs), allowing them to sell their products at higher prices in the
market.
Over time, however, our clients began demanding more. They wanted
proof of product traceability and evidence of fair crew management
practices, which aligned with today's discussion topic: human rights.
Thus, we began incorporating human rights considerations into our
audit standards.”
