Ongoing engagement Through its strategic activities, the CHRP was able to establish a constructive and collaborative relationship with the Philippines’ Representative to AICHR. In addition to the meetings it organised, the CHRP was invited by the Office of the Philippines’ Representative to attend stakeholder meetings on the development of the proposed framework on environment rights in Southeast Asia. Drawing on the insights and contributions of multiple stakeholders across key sectors, the CHRP provided a substantial contribution to the Philippines’ draft position on the proposed regional framework. The CHRP will continue to support the Philippines Representative as the discussions on the possible regional framework progress during 2023. In addition to the project activities, the Philippines’ Representative to AICHR provided a message of support which was shared at a CHR event – ‘Roundtable on Climate Change, the Environment and Human Rights’ – held during Human Rights Week in December 2022. Further, the Office of the Philippines’ Representative to AICHR has engaged with the CHRP on other human rights issues of concern, including a request for an opinion on the situation of Filipino human rights defenders living outside of the Philippines. National activity: Samoa Engaging government leaders and policymakers In April 2023, the Ombudsman/NHRI of Samoa convened a High-Level Dialogue and workshop for executives and senior staff of government agencies undertaking work related to the environment and climate change. The discussions focused on the links between human rights and climate change, promoted the importance of integrating a human rights-based approach in climate-related policy and actions, and helped build a commitment to collaborative work between the NHRI and participating government agencies, as well as Pacific IGMs and civil society organisations. Samoa is tackling climate change at home and on the international stage with partners from the Pacific supported by the Office of the Ombudsman, Samoa. The Office brought together government leaders and policymakers as well as intergovernmental bodies to discuss how human rights can strengthen climate action, ensuring all voices are heard.
